BOXING: Witney duo miss out on glory

Windrush Valley’s involvement in the National Schoolboys Championships came to an end at Exeter Hall, Kidlington as both of their boxers– involved in the class 3 (15 years and under) category – bowed out.
Tommy Lee Connors faced a formidable task by tackling West Ham’s Charlie Kenny – who is bidding for his third successive schoolboy title in the 52 kg category.
Game and brave, Connors could not match his rival’s power and precision and was halted early in the clash. And, despite an encouraging start Jake James Ianson succumbed to the superior firepower of Tottenham rival Prince Abanihi in their 70 kg clash.
He was stunned by a five-punch cluster – that prompted a standing count – and the corner promptly retired him.
